Liam Payne, a former member of the boyband One Direction, has passed away after falling from a hotel window in Buenos Aires, according to local police. He was 31 years old.

Payne’s death occurred on Wednesday at a hotel located on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood, according to a statement provided by the police to CNN.

Buenos Aires police reported that officers from the 14B Police Station responded to the hotel on Wednesday afternoon after receiving a 911 call about an aggressive man who was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, the police statement did not confirm that the individual was Payne.

Payne was recently seen in Argentina attending a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan on October 2, as shown in videos shared on social media from the event.

He had recently celebrated his 31st birthday in the UK, according to videos posted on his Snapchat. Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Payne was the youngest of three siblings and studied music technology at the City of Wolverhampton College.

Payne was best known as a member of the iconic British boyband One Direction. The group, which included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan, was formed in 2010 after each member competed on the UK version of the reality show “The X Factor.” CNN has reached out to Payne’s representatives as well as those of his former One Direction bandmates for comment.

“I do love being on stage,” Payne said in a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, reflecting on his time performing and songwriting with the group. He expressed particular pride in co-writing the song “What a Feeling.”

“That was a big one that me and Louis wrote together,” Payne recalled. “It just kind of came together. It was inspired by a Fleetwood Mac sound. It’s just a nice driving jam — imagine driving down the coast.” One Direction announced their hiatus in 2015. Payne later launched his solo career, releasing his debut album LP1 in 2019. In May 2023, he shared that he was working on a new album and planning a tour that he was “really excited” about.

He had openly discussed his past struggles with substance abuse and mentioned completing treatment, celebrating six months of sobriety in the summer of 2023.

The planned tour was initially scheduled to begin in South America in September 2023, but Payne had to postpone the dates after being diagnosed with a kidney infection.

In March of this year, Payne released a single titled “Teardrops.”

Payne was also a father; he had a son, born in 2017, with former Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole.

In a video shared on YouTube in 2023, Payne spoke fondly of his son, Bear.

“He’s amazing. He’s growing up way too fast,” Payne shared. “He’s much smarter than I’ll ever be. He’s a wonder.”
